Copyright protection is different from patents and trademarks, as no copyright application needs to be filed before a work is protected under copyright law. Instead, copyright protection is granted as soon as an original work of authorship has been fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Registration of the copyright is not necessary for the work to be protected, although registration does provide enough benefits that it is almost always recommended for a company’s important new works.
